Organize A Creative Space

I think everyone needs a place where they can be creative. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy, but a designated and inspiring place you can go to create, journal, dream and design. Although I am looking forward to moving into my new home later this fall, I am super grateful that I have been able to have a place to create above our barn, here at the farm. Without this area, there was no other space inside the farmhouse to do this, as it’s fairly small. Even though it’s not exactly how I want it set up, it sure has been great to have this designated place for Autumn and I to go. She has her play room on one side, and I have my space on the other. She does her school work and music practice in the middle of the room. I am looking forward to posting my new creative space before the end of this year, which I am just now starting to design. But in the meantime, I wanted to share some organizational ideas for any creative space.

Here's my library cabinet. I have books organized in categories. It's actually three tiers in height, but I could only fit part of it into the picture.

I separate my books into categories like painting, sewing, knitting, decorating, jewelry making, etc for easy access. Whenever I want to learn something new or I just need some inspiration - Having these books close by, really makes me happy.

Here's one of my open shelf areas. I organized my glitters and glues, craft kits, etc. I also store tags I've made in the blue basket. That way, when I need a quick gift in a hurry, they are ready to go. I have five total matching shelf cabinets like this one.

I love this two tier carousel tower. It organizes so many small items. My favorite part is that you just spin it to see what you are looking for.

When organizing loose items, I use these small snap closure envelopes. These are holding my scrap ribbons.

I store my ribbons spools on a shelf that my mom and dad made for me, above the window area.

I couldn't get it all into one picture, so I took three.

Lastly, here is the far right side pictured above. You can see it is organized by colors. It's so much quicker to grab what I need in a hurry.

I finally figured out a system to hold all those scrap papers to reuse quickly and easily. It's just a color coded, desktop file organizer.

You can use any type of container to store things - This is a flower pot.

I love these storage drawers. They are sold in the hardware section of most stores. They work so great for organizing ink pads, embossing supplies, small cutting tools, etc. I only wish they came in white. This one is dark grey. I'm hoping one day the company who makes these will catch on that women love them too and make them in a variety of colors. :)

Believe it or not, this is a cabinet insert that never got installed at our lake house we lived in years ago. It's been put to good use in my craft area for years.

I love recycling things for storing supplies in. This jar use to house a candle. After the candle was all used up, I put it in the freezer to harden up the little bit of left over wax so I could pop it out easily. I have lot's of cute little jars like these that I use in my space to organize supplies.

I used a silverware drawer insert I bought on clearance at Marshalls for five dollars to store my threads and sewing supplies in.

Here is a sewing kit I made for Autumn last year. I fit everything in this portable bag made by Thirty-One Gifts, except the sewing machine itself.

Another picture of things we store in the main part of the bag. Here are two fishing tackle boxes I used to organize her stuff. One is from the manly fishing section and one is a Barbie fishing tackle box.

You can see how easily just about anything can be utilized to set up a creative space. Remember to think outside the box and to set aside a little time each week to create.

Lastly, it’s penny sales at all the office stores. I’ve had very little extra time lately to do things like this, but I managed to go twice over the last few weeks. Here is what I got on one of my trips to Staples. I think I spent under $10. for everything. The copy paper was .01 with an easy rebate – it really is easy.
